Today I went on a hike at Las Trampas Regional Park, a park in the Bay Area. I went geocaching there, and while at one of the geocache locations, I suddenly heard the most wonderful wild sound -- a chorus of coyotes! I made a video which captured some of the sound. Listen here: I did an 8 mile hike, on a marvelous scenic loop from the valley to the ridge and back down again. I didnt' take this photo of a coyote....never got that close! View from the ridge

Is it safe? We have found out that 1 mile from here coyotes showed up, not native to this area, but brought ilegally. Some neighbors are getting ready to take care of them, if they come too close. Seems they were displaced by new homes construction.

Maria, that seems odd, coyotes brought in illegally? I wouldn't think it likely -- unless someone tried to make them into pets and then it didn't work and let them go...coyotes are very adaptable!
I have never been afraid of coyotes....they quite rarely attack people, though there have been some cases where they have attacked children -- a case in Southern california where one caused the death of a child. I would guess that in their natural habitat they would not attack a person. Sometimes when their habitat is encroached upon as on suburban edges, they may be more aggressive.
The only coyote who ever approached me, was approaching begging for food. It was one in Death Valley national park, many years ago.
