Power outage during Guest reservation, what to do?
Hi Guys,
We were informed yesterday that the area where we are located is to have a power outage from 8.00am until 15.30pm on the 25th (tomorrow).
We have 4 guests staying in our apartment during this time and we are in a slight quandary about what to do.
Would you offer a refund, discount for this time?
I have seen on a few hosts "Rules", that they will not be held responsible for things out of their control such as this, but its not about the money we are concerned, its the guest experience and I suppose, what I would expect if I were the guest.
Anyway, any thoughts, what would you do?

If I were you I would start by speaking to the guests about it and see how they respond. Often guests are out during the day, touring or on vacation, and don't really need power during the day. If yours are, then probably they won't be inconvenienced by this and you don't need to offer any refund. If the power was out during a time when guests really needed it, and for a considerable amount of time when they needed it, I would consider offering a partial refund for that day.

Thanks Deorah, We have spoken to them already and explained the situation. I was just looking for "What would you do", kind of thing as I feel a little uncomfortable for them. They will be out during the day, most times guests are, sight seeing, but its kinda hot here now in Bangkok, and the luxury is coming back to Air Con .. which wont be available.

I'd give them a discount and ask them to stop off for a cool drink before going back to the apt. Can you have somebody turn on the A/C as soon as the power resumes?

I would provide plenty of water but also be thinking about plan B if the power does not come back on that evening. Having spent time in Thailand with a few power outages during the night - Aircon is essential.

We lost power for about 4 hours in October when we had an early snowstorm. Our guests were from Australia and not used to the snow. Thankfully the heat in our listing works without needing electricity. I provided some extra candles and two flashlights. They were fine and enjoyed watching a beautiful snowfall from the warmth of the apartment. They never asked for a discount nor did I offer one.

Thailand is a tropical country and hot, Is it the whole building ? let them know of the situation unforeseen events is something that you have no control of and let them know your willingness to compensate them for the inconvenience... say a gift card for lunch or dinner for 2 ? I hope that your guests are understanding and if they will make a big feat out of it.. tell them that you are more than willing to give them 1 free night if they want to extend their stay for one day.. just a thought.. Good Luck !

I'd try to avoid a refund situation, but would offer dinner out if it was warm that evening.-while the a/c starts to cool the place.

I use a stay agreement that covers this, but would still try to do something for the guests due to the inconvenience

I should have looked at your listing; I do whole house only, so would be affordable for me......if it was at an inexpensive place! ;-)
