Shoes or no shoes, request to turn off heat?
'
Sooooo, we are just had our first guest. Never even saw her as she was gone all day. But she left the lights and heat on all day( environmentally irresponsible and lots of $$$) also, all of the blinds and curtains were closed for days which means no light for the plants which need some. Do you all post rules and signs about such things? Also, we live in the muddy northwest, is it reasonable to ask guests to remove their shoes? I would offer a basket and slippers??

My current guests left the downstairs lights on all night. They also had the windows wide open whilst the heating is on - 2 of my pet peeves. I don't have written rules, so just a verbal request for them not to do it again sufficed. Providing slipper socks if you do not allow shoes in the house is a good idea. They can be easily laundered in time for the next guest.

I have such things in the house rules and manual (feel free to read) but I also have little post it's with friendly reminders up in case guests forget.
On the door for example I have a note that reminds people to lock the door and turn lights off when they leave.
I know it's maybe a bit pernickety but I stuck them up for guests who were here when I was away and left them up.

It's reasonable to request that guests take off outside shoes before entering the house. I have a note on the back of the front door with reminders/requests like locking the key box, removing shoes, turning HVAC down or up when they leave depending on the season, etc.
I have a programmable thermostat I set to a reasonable range to avoid the extreme highs or lows, but I don't want to be too militant about defining the guests comfort. One reviewer recently mentioned in private comments that they felt the rules were so restrictive they couldn't touch anything. I thought it was a bit hyperbolic especially since they said in their public review that they would come back, but I did review my rules and requests as a result.

although it may be environmentally responsible to leave the light & heat on all day, no one has told that to the majority of the American public....the solution is to have a programmable thermostat with pre set programs (but then you run into the militant restrictions cited above)...or to have a smart thermostat which you can check periodically & change the temps yourself....
For some reason, my guests seem to want all the shades drawn all the time!! it drives me crazy to go into a dark cave! do they think people are spying on them?? it's maddening...

I know rick!!! I think a lot of the appeal is the lovely light the house gets! The first thing i do in the am is open all of the blinds. Thanks everyone. Im going to frame a friendly reminder.

I have some guests who put towels over the curtains I guess because they are too sheer? Only one window though. It's a basement apartment so it's not like a lot of people can even see in. Since it is a basement apartment, I like as much natural light as possible.

If they're putting towels over them and it's practicable, you may want to add some blinds or a shade they can use if they like...
We're on the first floor of a house that's about 6 feet off street level and behind a row of hedges, but many guests close the blinds, pull the curtains (and we also have sheers). I think some open them during the day to let the sunlight in the floor to ceiling windows - or at least I hope so. It's so much prettier with sunlight.

The only guest who have done it are my recent drug addicts and a few couples having sex. I have thought about film over the window to obscure the glass but let light in. My experience with guests is blinds would confuse them and they would wind up busted. Since it's a basement window, the blinds would have to be custom.

I think that film would be easiest and cheapest.

I have noticed, even though I have no specific rules about shoes on or off, that when I escort my guests to the cottage and take off my shoes at the door, a vast majority of guests take theirs off too and follow my lead.

Christina, you could also provide eye masks - a much cheaper option for those preferring to sleep in the dark

It's not that the space is too bright. These guests only cover 1 out of 6 windows and it is out of privacy concerns.

I recently added shoes off to the house rules. I wanted to have it in place from the get go, but thought people would not respond well to it. To me it is second nature. Why wear dirty shoes through the clean house? And I recently put down all new bamboo floors so now it's a rule. One guest left feedback that if I want to do the "japanese no shoe thing I should also consider the japanese thing of leaving slippers by the door" this sentence had me cracking up. I wasn't aware that it was a "Japanese thing" Hahaha. To me it is from years and years and years in karate and yoga studios. it's a respect for the space thing, not Japanese. Anyhow, now I mention the rule to guests and let them know to bring slippers if they'd like. I will also update my listing to mention it. And YES, rules about turning the heat down if they will be out all day are in the house manual. People are wasteful and not aware of much of their surroundings.
