ALl the posts on the groups were arranged in threads consecutively ordered across the whole span of groups, rather than within each group. ALso there was never any working search function in the groups. This meant that you could not find material at all in the larger groups except by scrolling down or saving links....
Entering random old thread numbers did allow a fun form of time travel. One could post onto threads that were originally posted 3 years ago by entering the thread number.

I wish she can at least say " hey " I'm still the orgaizer of this group.

Fleur, Dan and kids Fleur, Dan and kidsa year ago Lol Deborah! Can we overthrow the moderator as I can see now she is no longer a host?
Deborah Deboraha year ago It's possible, Fleur, although I think a polite stepping down would be most (email hidden)d let someone else with time to do the work step up...or else we just all will continue to let off steam periodically about the ads and blank faces on the forum....
Rick Ricka year ago she did reply to me several times when I e mailed her directly...I think she is overwhelmed by the position
Nicole Nicolea year ago I thought Fleur was helping... What did I miss?
Nicole Nicolea year ago Wait... Was it Julie and Eric?
Fleur, Dan and kids Fleur, Dan and kidsa year ago J & E were helping then got kicked out before they got the chance to add me as a moderator as well. Maybe we all need to get on top of the adds again??
Nicole Nicolea year ago Wow! If the moderator is no longer a host a say we stage a coup!
gene genea year ago Ever increasingly we are learning what a dangerous place the internet can be. Consequently I try to take appropriate precautions against hacking and mis-use of the information I post---on Airbnb and everywhere else. But PARANOIA is irrational fear, and is a really nasty personal trait in the hospitality business. Seems to me a host who is unwilling to post his/her picture on the listing is a little to freaky to trust. The same goes for the guest who refuses to post a picture of himself, or tell the potential host pertinent information about himself. PARANOIA is a sign of mind-bending drug use, or a sign of a psychologically disrupted mind, or both. I try always to be open and "street wise." Being fearful only gets in the way of my perception and ability to make good assessments, followed by good decisions.
Reply Like 2 replies Deborah Deboraha year ago I consider the cartoon silhouettes an indication of lack of effort. The paranoid can post a flower bouquet or a sunset as their profile photo. At least then an effort is made. WIth the cartoon blank, there is no effort made. I posted three of the recent four blank host profile pages -- on three out of four of those, the "hos"t has no listing, no reviews, no verifications or only email, doesn't even state their city or even their country, and nothing about themselves. In other words, a totally blank profile as well as a blank face.
Rick Ricka year ago Some people are weirded out by just having a photo "out there" on the internet! I have a friend who's very "anti" social media & she has warned me on pain of death not to include any pictures or her EVER posted on facebook...Yes...I take this as a sign of extreme fear & paranoia...but there are others among us! Deborah..you might remember the kerfuffle over a host posting a picture of her SISTER (much younger) or other family member...so a guest thought they were going to the house of someone their own age rather than someone their mother's age! LOL... People are weird...

At one point Airbnb saw the difficulty of allowing more and more and more hosts to create any type of new host community group, when of the existing 440 groups, only about 12 were actively used. Hosts would get an idea, start a group, find little interest, then give up, and the group would sit there taking up space. It would be a ghost town to anyone who visited...some groups did not have any posts in them for years.
So at a point in late 2014 or early 2015 AIrbnb stopped allowing hosts to create new host groups. They also started to remove groups that had only 1 or 2 or a half dozen people in them.
One host, who had a group with only 1 person in it, called Poetry Airbnb Page, posted on NHF that she wanted to make that member (Tamil from Bengaluru) feel welcome --- and lobbied for the keeping of her group, even if it only had one member!

THanks ANdrew for providing more insight into the history of the Airbnb host community groups! That is history I didn't know about. It may be that some future sociology student decides to pursue the history of the home sharing phenomenon, at some point, and so I think it is worthwhile for that reason and others to preserve some record of it.....and we are, after all, a resurgence of a phenomenon which to my knowledge has not happened in comparable numbers since the Victorian era and the latter part of the 19th century in America...

Did you know...that although Airbnb is now quite serious about "diversity" in its ranks, and has hired a "Director of Diversity" (David King) and created a non-discrimination policy, this was how Airbnb was presenting its community back in November 2013 when they first created the Host Groups:
How does that image strike you as far as diversity is concerned?
How does that saying go...first take the log out of your own eye before you point out the mote in someone else's eye?
