My first guest checked out today
I became a new host two weeks ago and just had my first guest checked out today. I was brought up in a home where everyone removes shoes when entering the house, and that's just how it always has been in my apartment. I put up a nice little reminder and explained to him upon check-in, but it seems that he's been wearing his shoes inside during his stay. What should I do more to encourage my guests to take off their shoes in my apartment?

Provide slippers and put them at the entry door.

Will try that. I personally don't like using slippers others have used and that's why I hesitated to buy a few pairs. I will try and definitely get back to you. Thanks for the tips!

You can get washable slippers. You'd just need a few pairs to account for a range of sizes. They're pretty cheap. We don't use them because we don't mind people walking in the house with their shoes on. But try to find the ones made out of terry cloth material with no backs and just a strap across the mid-sole.

I offer washable slippers. You can get pairs cheaply at IKEA. Usually when I walk my guest in, I take off my own shoes or they see we are just in socks and they usually ask if they should take their shoes off.

I love reading all the postings here. There are a lot of learnings. In my culture, we don't wear shoes in the house, too. Most people would comply with the request. But I still find some guests who don't quite get this and put on their shoes in the bedroom when they leave the house. It is frown upon. Shoes, which have been worn outdoors can never be worn inside the house, even when you're getting ready to go out because the soles are dirty. We keep our floors clean all the time. No dust. No grime. Shoes meant solely for indoor use is gaining acceptance in my culture.

Hi Genie, if my opinion would help. I am thinking to buy washable slippers for my guests. However I do not feel comfortable to ask them to take off their shoes. For the time being, I bought a sweet little carpet, placed it at the entry into the apartment, and think that the dirt from the shoes would stay at the carpet. Later I would wash it and eventually replace with another one. After each guest we wash all floors with antibacterial detergents. I hope that helped a bit. Regards, Fran

If all else fails get a vicious dog trained to chew the legs of humans wearing shoes indoors :-)
