It's bad enough having sleep disturbed in the middle of the night by Airbnb reservation reminders, but really didn't appreciate getting woken up at 2am by spam..

I'm so sorry to hear your comments and feel that my webinar was spam. This was a free event for hosts.
I requested and received permission from your group moderators. I respect groups and don't like when people start selling their services without providing anything to the community. Since the beginning of groups, I have been an active participant, collaborating and answering questions. I felt creating a monthly event where we could discuss issues, beyond the groups would be of interest to many people.
Glenn emailed the group to let you know of the event, since not everyone comes to the groups all the time. I emailed Glenn your comments.
It was never my intention to be seen as "spam". Unless you're in Hawaii and it's a good thing.

Evelyn, to be fair if anyone needs anything then it's that persons prerogative to go into a group to seek whatever advice they need. I'm sure your intentions are all good and how often does anyone offer free advice in this world! If they choose not to go into a group then there's a reason for it? It just seems like 1 rule for 1 and another for someone else. I could offer accountancy on NHF because I feel I could help someone (example only because I'm not an accountant). I expect more from a moderator to not know the difference quite frankly.

I run the Brooklyn and Legalize Sharing in NY group. I understand that people are busy with full time jobs and hosting. Not everyone is on the groups every day. As hosts we have this amazing community. We learn, comment, question, grow and communicate. We, moderators, only email members when we have some information that we feel is important. You could remain on groups and stop notifications. I actually have my phone on not disturb at night so the Airbnb dings wake me up. Again, I'm sorry that you and others were offended by the notification of this webinar. Not my intention

I received a couple of emails, but it wasn't a problem for me. I wasn't "in attendance" because I had another engagement planned. Will there be an opportunity to listen to the webinar as a podcast later?

Hello everyone,
The email I sent out was not Spam. When you joined the group, you opted in to receive communications from the group organizer(s).
Evelyn voluntarily offered her time and knowledge for the benefit of the host community and I felt this was important enough to directly inform the members of the New Hosts Forum. I can count one hand how many times I have directly emailed all the members of the group.
Please note that I will continue to do so for events like this in the future. Ahman, Gordon, Paola, Susan and anyone else who does not wish to receive these types of emails, I invite you to opt out of these future communications by removing yourself from the group.
Here is how to do that: On the right side of the header graphic at the top of this page, click "Member," and in the drop down menu that appears, click "Leave Group." This will opt you out of any communications like the one from me that you found unwelcome.
If you are unable or unwilling to follow the opt out instructions, please feel free to email me and I will gladly do it for you.
Regards,
Glenn

Must be a cultural thing (which is funny because I'm Chinese from HK). You do make me giggle Glenn with your like it or lump it attitude. "Do as I say and don't do as I do" it is pretty much how it sounds to me, not the first time I've seen behaviour like this and I'm sure it won't be the last. Makes no apology for what he did but insteads says "sod off if you don't like it". Love it, always such a great source of entertainment. I'll take an occasional shameless plug for a front seat to watch how a great leader leads.

That's not how I took his response at all. When you join the group you are opting in for group communications. Period. Glen is being helpful by letting people know that if we don't want to receive any generous opportunities to learn how to improve your business then we can opt out of the group. No need for anyone to be rude or disrespectful. BTW, we all know that we can turn off our ringers at bedtime, correct? Or turn on don't disturb and only get alerts from approved contacts when we don't want alerts going off? One of my favorite quotes is "Don't complain about what you allow." Best advice I ever got.

Evelyn - nobody is disputing the fact that you have long been a much valued and dedicated contributor to the groups, and in doing so have provided fantastic support and advice to members, which I'm sure is greatly appreciated by all, including myself.
However, this is a completely different kettle of fish altogether. How can it NOT constitute spam when thousands of people received unsolicited emails that direct them to your personal website, which expressly promotes yourself, your listings and your One-to-One Consultation facility, where you're selling a phone-line advice service at $95 an hour?? Yes, this Webinar was a free event for hosts but whether intentional or not, it felt very much like the age-old 'taster' ploy so beloved of marketing agencies - 'we'll give you this much for free, but if you want more, you have to purchase it right here'. Even the line in the Webinar email that says one lucky winner can receive a free half-hour consultation with you smacks of advertising for your business services. So it's very difficult to view this Webinar as a solely altruistic gesture, when it actually comes across as a clever tactic to direct as much traffic as possible to your website - where you're selling advice in the 'sharing' economy at $95 a pop. Also - and please correct me if I'm wrong here as I'm having trouble recalling the exact details - but did you not post a while back to ask whether or not there was any interest in members paying you something like $25 for a very similar-sounding Webinar?
As regards setting one's phone to 'do not disturb' at night, there are many, many reasons why a lot of people can't afford the luxury of this option and need to be contactable at all times in case of emergency situations - from elderly parents to kids living abroad. Additionally, as we're all acutely aware, Airbnb place a great deal of emphasis on the fact that our Response Times should be as low as possible. In my own particular case, the vast majority of my inquiries are from guests in different time zones, so come in during the night. If I were to wait till morning to respond to such inquiries, then there's a very big chance that someone else would have snapped up those bookings while I slept, and I'd be out of the game altogether.
In relation to Glenn's thinly-veiled 'if you don't like it, you can sod off' response - whilst wholly predictable, it still comes over as a rather dictatorial attitude from someone who's a moderator of a 'community' group, where the views of one are (supposedly) of equal value to the views of another. So much for the freedom of expression. Yes, we may have opted in to receive notifications by joining this group, but we most certainly didn't sign up to be sold stuff - whether openly or under the guise of something far more benevolent. And to all intents and purposes, that's exactly what this whole episode felt like.

Had something come up and I missed the webinar, unfortunately. My internet provider made some sweeping changes with email that took effect on Thursday. One thing they did was install spam filter software . The change was unannounced to me. Your email reminders of the event got quarantined in a spam folder and I totally missed the event even though I'd registered. I was disappointed and now hoping to attend the next one if that happens. Hopefully I'll learn the new software by then . LOL. Haven't got your email yet Evelyn but I'll visit your site.

Karla Please speak for yourself, not for me. Unless the rules have been changed, we're all entitled to an opinion. And I'll decide what's good (or not) for my "body or mind". While I don't doubt that Evelyn is a valued member of the community, I didn't sign up for direct mailings which are effectively a loss-leader for her business venture. If I'd wanted to participate then I'd have signed up, after all, the 'ad' has been up on the site for long enough, even if I wasn't on here every day. As for Glenn's 'get lost of you don't like it' message, I find this aggressive, rude and inappropriate. I'll expect a serious reprimand for saying this, of course. And when something "REALLY serious" does go on, I'll expect a direct mail.
