Remind guest to leave a review
Hi hosts,
I am wondering whether any of you remind your guests to leave a review. We had some guests who did not bother to leave a review, and we also never reminded them to leave one. We would be happy to know what other hosts do when guests do not write review after they left. In our case, we never reminded or told our guests to write a review. We think this is simply not good to force anyone to leave review. We would be happy to hear your experiences.
Thank you!

Yes - we use our desire to "receive and give good reviews" as the first point in our house manual to seque into how to contact us; we mention it at the end of the check in instructions email, and we leave a note under the door on the last morning of their stay reminding them of this among other things (check out time, how to check out, clean up before you go, etc.). We never force anyone. I'd rather have no review than a bad one, but I'd sure like the feedback.

Just wondering, do you have a post or something where you go deeper into explaining what sort of things to include in that note you leave under the door? It sounds like something super useful!

Here it is – I've removed some specific information. Of course, all the formatting is lost when I paste here - I use font size and weight to bring attention to certain words: Thank you for choosing us! check out As a reminder, check out is at 12 noon. If you check out prior to noon, kindly text, email or call and let us know. We don’t charge a cleaning fee for our guests’ benefit, so we really appreciate guests leaving the apartment as close as possible to the condition it was at check in. If anything was out of order no matter how small, please let us know; we know stuff happens so if anything was damaged, we appreciate finding out from the guest first, so please tell us. key You can leave the key on the pub table in the living room or in the key lock on the deck. reviews You’ll receive an email asking for a review - if you enjoyed your stay, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to write us one, even if brief. If the service you used allows it, we’ll write you a review in return. We hope you had a great stay and have a nice trip back!

In my welcome letter I say something to the effect of "if you enjoyed your stay please be sure to leave us a positive public review, we will do the same for you. We welcome opportunities to improve our accommodation without having to raise our price, if you have any suggestions please include them in the private feedback section of the review process." So far 100% review rate, thankfully all positive and a few easy suggestions for improvement. I include the part about price to try to encourage them to think about what they are getting compared to the price they are paying when writing the review which seems to be an issue with the rating process for lower priced places.

The only person I had to remind (twice - she was only my second guest and we had a fun time together plus I helped her with lots of extra stuff) didn't leave a review. She left a nice hand written note and I reviewed her but there's nothing more I could have done... She's one of those very busy people!

A host who has tons of lovely reviews and never writes her guest reviews came to stay. I asked her why she never wrote reviews - she said she never meets her guests so she doesn't know why she'd review them, but she'd leave me one. Guess what? No review.

Even if you don't meet the host, you can still review the room and the remote interaction with the host.

I send each guest an email after they leave saying how much I enjoyed their stay. I say, "I hope that you will leave a review of your stay. And please let me know, in the private notes, if there is anything I can do to improve my offering!"

I do the same than Sheryl... But today, i sent a new msg to a guest that left a week ago and still didn't write a review. I don't think I'm going to write again. If he doesn't review me now, i think he never will.
It would be a shame, since it's only my third guest and really need those reviews.

I do the same thing as well – I schedule a reminder email for the seventh day if I haven't received one by the third day. A lot of people are traveling so don't expect 100% reviews – don't worry, you will get a lot of great reviews soon. :-)

The times I've asked they've usually written one. Especially if I've gone the extra mile I may ask again when the 2 week period is ending.

I have become good friends with nearly all the guests I had so if I dont get a review in 3 days. I send them a message on FB, something like "Hope you had a safe flight! I know you are busy but Id deeply appreciate a review from you" and I give her the link for review guidelines. Also, I always convey how important reviews are in our conversations. Dont be shy in sending an e-mail or message!

Zain made a really good point – include the instructions on how to give a review on both the app and in the full site. One guest thanked me for doing that because they couldn't figure it out.

Out of 20 guests we have just had two (I think!) who did not review. Both really nice women here in town at separate times for advanced yoga training. Coincidence? One was our first guest so that bothered me. The second was just recent and she left a hand written note that was very positive so maybe feels she didn't need to do the online review? I think I will borrow some of the great suggestions above and include with my house info. Thanks!
