That's a new one for me
I had guests that complained that my pillows were not fluffy enough. I have two kinds of pillows, hard and medium hard so I guess now I will have to buy fluffier ones (sigh). I am sometimes discouraged that guests are asking too much for the price ($70). Even in the hotels i went to (2-3 stars) I never got the "pillow service" where you can get the kind of pillow you want (hardness/material). I heard about that but that was only in 4 to 5 star hotels...... so now am I supposed to offer **** hotel rooms for a 1-2 star price??

Oh, I believe it! This spring I hosted a couple from Canada who were also Airbnb hosts. I have 4 pillows on the bed. Two are European squares; the other two are standard size. All four are top-quality down encased in pillow protectors and then high-thread count linen shams. My guests told me that they felt the European squares were "too big," and that the standard pillows were "too soft." Guess I should have thrown four hard-as-a-rock $5 bargain synthetic pillows on the bed?
By the way, when I travel, whether in-state or internationally, I pack my favorite down pillow. It squishes into any suitcase, and it's what I need in order to feel comfortable. I'm in an Airbnb apartment in Florence, Italy, right now with Mr. Pillow. ;-) (waves hello)

but that's the problem : I would have to have 20 pillows in my home to get every combination possible (square, soft, hard, standard, etc, etc.....)I don't have enough room in my house to store all those! As you say, if people are particular about their pillows, they shoudl travel with their own!

That's the feedback I will give them : what do you think?
we enjoyed having you stay over. Sorry that we did not have fluffier pillows than the two kinds that we are offering (hard and medium hard). We usually get lots of European visitors and they prefer their pillows on the harder side. I wish I had more room in my house to store more kinds though!
I hope the other services we offered made up for the pillows hardness (like the use of the printer, the beach towels etc....). We strive to offer our guests a good service for the price.

My 2 cents -
"Thanks for the feedback. We strive to offer our guests a good service for the price.I hope everything else was to your satisfaction."
Engaging on a stupid (sorry) complain will get you nowhere. I have someone tell me the refrigerator was too loud. What can I do about that? Someone say the wifi signal was too week. That I could fix.
Having a selection of pillows, is unrealistic. Amazing how this little nit pickers stay with us.. look I still remember the fridge comment.

acutally these were the artsy/new yorker types and I guess they thought they wanted to go the "typical/charming" way but were so used to luxury hotel that it was a shock for them to go to a regular home. I wish people would read the description thoroughly because if they are disappointed in a case like this, it's definitely NOT because I have lied about my place or misrepresented it....

That's interesting, about the hardness of the pillows! I guess I had not realized pillows could be "hard" vs "fluffy". What I offer is one "thick" pillow and one "thin" one. (Don't tell the guests, but the thin ones are just older, the thick ones are new.) When I orient them to their bedroom, I point this out. So far, have not had complaints about pillows, but one person did say that the mattress was too firm, and so I actually mention that in my description " comfortable bed with good quality (firm) mattress". No complaints since then.

Suggestion: use the word "firm" instead of "hard" when you're talking about pillows and mattresses. Firm is positive, implying support. Hard is negative, and sounds like something you wouldn't want to experience in a bed. Well... unless... oh nevermind. ;-)

Yes, Engish is not my first language and I don't always use the right words sometimes. You're right, firm sounds better :-)

I would be tempted to reply by telling them that other guests using the same pillows have found them too soft, and asking them what they would do if two different people said that a pillow was too hard and too soft.

Actually I did that for guests who complained after the fact that my house was too warm. I asked them why they did not ask me to lower the temp, and also let them know that the previous guest had asked for a blanket for the night since it was cold; I told them I can't guess what's everybody's preferences are. If I can help them, good; if I can't, I am not going to buy 30 different pillows just in case.....

I would try to stay positive and just say something to the effect of "thank you for the tip on the pillows... I will definitely look into it! Hope you guys had a great time and enjoyed our lovely city, etc. etc. etc." Whatever you do, don't get defensive and try to explain yourself. Take it as a learning moment and try something different next time you invest in a pillow. It certainly was enlightening for me, as I should probably pay more attention to what kind of pillows I provide. thanks!
