Extra Guests

Maybe I am experiencing "guest fatigue" but I get a lot of requests from reservations where guests want to bring extra guests. Today, I received a request from someone who has a reservation tomorrow and wants to bring a guest. This is OK with us, and we altered the reservation. Then, they requested to bring a 3rd person, even though our room clearly indicates for 2 people. It just seems like people always want to push. We live in a two bedroom house (split level so it's apartment size). I don't want to spend all weekend having someone sleep on the couch. I declined her request for a 3rd person. The problem is, is that they're all attending a class together, so I hope it isn't awkward. I guess it's poor planning on their part.

Yep, it is. Sorry you're having this issue - it's just because you're an AwesomeHost!
I notice I get fatigued when I feel conflict between the experience I want the guest to have so I don't have to say no and they're satisfied (more guests than space fits), and reality (the space is too small). It's easier for me when I don't project my feelings and worry how the guest will take it.
PS I just asked a host to let us have an extra person in her listing explaining that we'll pay extra, bring extra bedding, and leave the place in pristine condition. I hate doing this but there are few options where we're going. I told her that it's her house, so it's her decision; I would have been okay if she said no. She agreed (but it's an entire place listing).

Thanks for the feedback. Definitely, if we were a whole listing then it wouldn't bother me at all. However, we live on site and it would come down to the extra guest either sleeping on a couch or an air mattress (which I don't have.)

This seems like one of the more common annoyances --- but it certainly does help when you live in the place and can make sure the guest doesn't sneak in several "extras." This happens a lot with landlords and long-term tenants also. THey rent to one person, or two, and indicate that only those who have signed the lease can live in the unit, and then come to find out later there are 3 or 4 living there, who are not on the lease and aren't really allowed to be residents there.
Yes, we can't save guests from the consequences of their poor planning.

Wow, didn't even think of this! I bet this happens often when the landlords don't live on site. I would be super mad to know people snuck in! (Especially since we charge after the 1st guest.)

There has only been one time when the guests begged to fit in their third adult guest as there was no place to book for him for some conference. Even though I only charge $10 extra a guest, they paid me $40 for the sheer joy of having him stay. It worked out fine, they were all squuezed in on the two twin beds.

Not just you Fabian - I just had a request for a single night (entire house which I don't do single nights) in the middle of a 3 day gap in bookings and they want to arrive early morning and leave late he next night - oh but don't want to pay for 2 nights! I said no!
