Locksmith expenses
Hi everyone
I need your input on this.
My current guests got their bag stolen last nite in a bar. They had to spend a few hours doing the report with the local police. They are OK, just sad since they had personal value things there.
The keys of the house were in the bag and i was out of the city, so they had to call a locksmith to broke the locks and get in. I was adviced by them by phone before going ahead.
My question is, is there any support/insurance from airbnb for the expenses they had? A locksmith here in the middle of the night (2 am) its pretty expensive + buying new locks, etc. and i feel terrible for them!
I called already airbnb support but they have to find out if ithey would cover something since they mentioned the robbery happended "outside" of the property..
Anyone had a similar experience with this?
Thank you all in advance

I would be very surprised if this was anything Airbnb covered, though travel insurance might, if they have travel insurance. I would be pretty confident that if a guest loses keys, regardless of how the loss occurs, from Airbnb's perspective the guest is responsible for the expenses that result from that.
This won't help with this particular situation, but for the future, it would be a good idea if you are not in the area, to either go to a keyless lock (that uses a code, no key needed) or hide a set of spare keys somewhere on the property. This way if the guest loses their key, you can instruct them where the spare set is. The keyless entry is the easiest of all, and you could change the code each time you have a new guest.

When it comes to locks it is also is much more expensive to have someone come to your home to re key your locks if you feel that is needed. Door knob and and dead bolts come apart with a screw driver. Use zip lock bags for the parts and take them to a locksmith. Total time for my house 1 hour cost for 3 door knob locks and one dead bolt was about $50.

I charge any of my guests a Lost Key fee in addition to any re-keying/lock replacement fee if for any reason the house keys are lost . I have this in my house rules section and also discuss this at the time I issue keys over to the guest .
Even if a guest has had a bad experience , I would feel badly for them , but my Home security and safety are a priority .
In Lino's case , I would be very worried, as if a pocketbook or backpack is stolen
with personal belongings, they may also have the Airbnb information containing the house address and information that the Thieves can use to rob the house .
A Lockbox feature might improve things , but I would perhaps have it hidden from plain sight so as not to advertise that keys maybe contain in them .
