Here is the home page of the Home Sharers organization, an incorporated organization, and a group of hosts which began in San Francisco, founded by Peter Kwan, and aims to eventually (though dont' hold your breath...it may take some time! )be a global host organization with chapters around the USA and world. Home Sharers organization is the FIRST STEP in creating an independent, worldwide community of hosts, something that many of us feel is valuable and needed for many reasons.

You can find the San Francisco, East Bay and North Bay chapters on this site. You'll need to register there and create an account to read the posts on the chat forums there.
Additionally, Homesharers of San Francisco has a facebook page:
www.facebook.com/homesharersf
As stated on the main home page of Home Sharers, this is an incorporated organization which does not receive financial support from any vacation rental site, including Airbnb. Homesharers organizers are not paid organizers, and we receive no compensation for our work, which is different from, for instance, the staff of many municipal Rent Boards (eg Berkeley Rent Stablization Board), who are paid staff, (with salaries which are often extremely generous!)
Currently, there are three chapters of Home Sharers, all located in the San Francisco Bay Area. These groups are part of the core organization, and each have a forum on Airbnb as well. However, these Airbnb group forums will be closed down when Airbnb changes its groups within the next month or so, therefore this new GlobalHosting forum will soon be the primary forum for Home Sharers and each of its chapters.

If you are interested in setting up a chapter of Home Sharers in your region, please let me or Peter know! One of the first purposes in creating regional Home Sharers chapters is in helping build the global community of hosts. SEcondly, it is particularly useful to set up Home Sharers chapters in regions of the nation or world where local governments are grappling with how to regulate short term rentals, as Home Sharers was founded as an advocacy organization. By organizing locally, you can more effectively advocate for our shared interests, which overlap with Airbnb's interests, as it too would like to see local governments develop favorable regulations for short term rentals (STR's). Yet it's the hosts rather than Airbnb the corporation who need to do the footwork, organize, go to meetings, write letters, give testimony at City Council meetings, etc. In the San Francisco Bay area, for instance, many municipalities have taken up this issue over the past year, including:
San Francisco
San Jose
Palo Alto
Berkeley
El Cerrito
Alameda
Oakland
Piedmont
Tiburon
Belvedere
Danville
Sausalito
Napa
Sonoma
