Hi There
I have just had a guest cancel because she was going to be charged my fee as well as a service fee by Airbnb of $21 for 2 nights.
No other guest has ever complained about this and I was unaware it. Is this new?

Hi Di and Barry
No, the Airbnb service fee isn't new -- it's been there since AIrbnb began. If you think about it, Airbnb could not exist if it did not charge a fee on transactions, because then it would make no money at all, if guest only paid you for your accomodations and nothing else. So in each transaction, both host and guest get charged a fee. Host gets charged 3%, guest gets charged between 6 to 12% depending on length of stay (longer stays usually have a lower fee).
It seems petty to me, for the guest to cancel because of the fee. First, $21 isn't very much, and then too, any other Airbnb listing she books, will also have a fee. We as the host should not have to explain to guests everything about using the system, but sometimes as you see here, a host may be motivated to help a guest understand the system if it means saving a booking and not having the guest cancel.
I suggest that you set your cancellation policy as moderate or strict rather than flexible If you have flexible, so that you don't lose everything with guests like this.

Maybe they did change something. It would be legally great for us in Croatia that they increase guest fee and not charge host fee. Any way it's very important for hosts to be informed about total charge for guests, as sometimes a small change in price can change total price in bigger amount. I would really like to see all algoritms in one place.
