As soon as you accept pets with hair, you will not get people allergic to pet hair. Or you get someone after a cat or dog who will have a problem. (As an allergy specialist told me last week, a cat in an apartment can cause a problem to a severely allergic person up to a year after the cat was there). - On the other hand, you'll get more people with pets. In our seaside apartment, we allowed pets for a few seasons and they sent us friends with pets (or they communicated by telepathy, as we did not check the pet friendly box). Tiled floors, nor much upholstery and everything washable, it was not so bad. A few chewed cheap Ikea rugs and rags.
I reconsidered after a lady with a small service dog.

A service dog is a dog which renders service to a handicapped person. Like guiding a blind person. They get on airplanes and in no dog hotel rooms and saying no is like discrimination. (You can have a No Animal rule, but a No Pet rule would not help, they are not pets, they are working). I had no intention to discriminate, but asked which kind of service it renders, as my place would be a death trap for a blind person. It helped overcome upset and anxiety. In other words, the owner was a bit particular. I wrote a story about it.

Aloha Helga, thanks for the story. I immediately changed my listings from No Pets to No Animals. Superhost arrives today, I told her I looked at her listing and it appeared she had did a quick copy of mine. She's from Oregon, I've long term rentals in WA. The laws for 'service animals' got brought up. For my long term houses, you cannot discriminate against a person with a service animal. The person has a doctor's prescription for it. You cannot charge a pet deposit. The way the real estate management gets around this in my case is to increase the damage deposit in order to cover animal damage without stating such. I have a girlfriend who wanted to get her nasty dog certified so he could join her on vacations..'for her anxiety of flying', like it ever stopped her in the past, and ....like to my house for extended stays. I told her good luck. I'm not a dog person, and she is just a dog 'screamer'. Drives everyone wacky with how the louder she yells, the dog runs faster in the opposite direction. I also added a NO to her bringing her step-daughter here for a good time. I'm way past that too.

Aloha Anne, I've seen a TV show about service animals, the patient's recovered/assisted/improved lifestyle; and especially for the two conditions you mentioned. Apparently the animals can sense the episode before it happens. Good deal, but not in this home.

I would not mind a diabetic person (maybe try to stay in daily contact) but epilepsy? If the dog fails, there is not much space and many breakables in my home ;-))
