Saw this trending on facebook. medium.com/matter/living-and-dying-on-airbnb-6bff8d600c04While I'm very sorry for the loss this gentleman suffered, I'd like to make note of the fact that people die in hotels, too. And probably occasionally in a property listed on VRBO or FlipKey. But it makes news because Airbnb is getting bigger by the day. I always think of the adage "there is no such thing as bad publicity". I just hope that continues to hold true as Airbnb is pummelled by bad press.

Hi Joyce -- yes, I saw that also, and posted it here:

I had the same response as you did, which is to question why this death is being associated with staying in an Airbnb rental. Actually it continues to really bother me that the kinds of things which happen to people in the course of their lives, whether they are at a place they own, or a long term rental where they reside, or at a hotel or friend's home, are now becoming narrowly associated only with Airbnb rentals. To read the news we are having, one would think that no one ever has a party, except at an Airbnb rental. That guests or renters never damage property, except at Airbnb rentals. No one ever squats in a place and refuses to pay rent, except at an Airbnb rental. Neighbors are not bothered by any kinds of renters, except for Airbnb renters. And now, the premise is that no one ever gets hurt or injured or has a serious accident, except at an Airbnb rental.
By focusing only on what happens at Airbnb rentals, and not printing news about all the problems that happen all the time at every other kind of rental, the media is very seriously distorting reality.
Life happens, accidents happen. This seems to be something that is very difficult for Americans in particular to accept. There isn't always someone to blame, and it's really an insult to the memory of someone's life to engage in finger-pointing instead of grieving and mourning.

Ah, I missed your post, Deborah, although I did scan the recents. I agree with what you had to say on yours.
