Internet...
I was getting some complaints from my guests regarding "wifi drops out" and sometimes, slow internet.
So today I upgraded yet again. It turns out I had an OLD modem, the Xfinity XB3, and they replaced it with an XB6 which they said would perform better.
Also, I am now paying a higher monthly fee for super fast internet speed -- Gigabyte speed.
I also bought "Xfinity Pods" which are supposed to help boost the signal in some areas of the house. I had previously had UniFi "Access Points" installed but now the Xfinity people say those might not work with the new Modem.
I am still doing tests to see what parts of the house get what speed.....
Ethernet speed in my room is indeed super fast, 900Mbps.
But when I tested wifi speed right next to the modem tonight, it was only 50Mbps.
If there's a huge discrepancy between ethernet speed and wifi speed I wonder if I should try to set up ethernet cables in each room.
What is your experience with these things?
Part of what motivated me to look into internet issues, was that I got a message from my internet service provider that I had exceeded my monthly data allowance this month. And a warning that I'd be charged for overages at a fairly high rate. This has never happened before, in my 13 years of living here.
Then I began inquiring with my guests about any heavy internet usage in the house.
I found that Xfinity wont' charge you for overages during the first month you exceed your data limit, but may charge you the 2nd month.
I then downloaded the Xfinity "XFI" app and was able to see all the devices connected to my internet network. Using info from the device names as well as the info I obtained about which Xfinity "POD" each device was connected to, when it was connected, I found out which of my guests had had extremely heavy internet use. Her use was 67% of the entire internet usage in the whole house, over 3 times as much as my use and when I'm home, I am often online much of the day, and do quite a bit of work online. I only had 16% of total internet use.
When I spoke to her about it, she seemed a bit upset, saying that she had had no idea this could be a problem and this was the first she'd heard of this kind of thing being an issue. At first I was asking her to cut back her internet use, but when I saw that this upset her (she is doing a lot of online research) I told her she could go ahead and do what she needed to do this month,
I find that a little disingenuous, since most people who do a lot of work online are aware that heavy internet use has consequences on the system.
