Senate Bill 18, authored by Nancy Skinner, is concerned with displacement of tenants -- and would strengthen their ability to fight eviction by providing them with FREE legal aid. BUt for anyone who has any understanding of the eviction process in California, they will understand that this bill would tip the already skewed landlord-tenant politics even more heavily towards the tenant, who is already favored. www.dailycal.org/2018/12/11/state-sen-nancy-skinner-introduces-bill-to-offer-legal-aid-for-at-risk-tenants/sd09.senate.ca.gov/news/20181203-senator-nancy-skinner-unveils-sb-18-%E2%80%9Ckeep-californians-housed%E2%80%9DAn eviction can be particularly costly, time-consuming and traumatic for smaller landlords, who can barely afford the thousands of dollars it can cost to pay attorney and court fees, and/or the lost rent and/or settlement cost. Landlords can lose many months or even over a year of rent, if a tenant fights an eviction, and this bill could make this situation even worse, by ensuring that more tenants will fight eviction proceedings.
