Sausalito prohibits short term rentals but has no currently effective way of enforcing this law. This may change with their hiring of "Host Compliance" to do their enforcement.
The controversy over whether to allow short-term rentals in Sausalito continues to unravel.... city officials have opted to step up enforcement of the law that currently bans those businesses.
“On any given night, I can look up AirBnB and see at least 15 to 20 advertised in Sausalito,” resident Sandra Bushmaker told City Council members at their meeting this week.
Sausalito officials have acknowledged that many rentals "fly under the radar", and resources that would allow for comprehensive enforcement of the ban have been lacking. The city currently enforces violations on a complaint basis, but officials say even when they receive complaints they often have trouble tracking down perpetrators and proving wrongdoing — a headache that has plagued many Marin County jurisdictions. On Tuesday, the Sausalito City Council agreed to a one-year contract with a Host Compliance, a third-party short-term rental monitoring service, allocating just over $10,000 for a year’s worth of assistance in stifling the illicit rental market.
The service provider, Host Compliance, offers a 24-hour complaint hotline and is contracted with Marin County, Mill Valley and San Rafael to help enforce regulations in those jurisdictions.
