In what just might be the biggest fine in the entire nation for doing illegal Airbnb rentals, San Francisco just fined a couple property owners in the city $2.25 million for doing illegal AIrbnb rentals in several of the apartment buildings they own. www.sfgate.com/business/article/SF-fines-Airbnb-landlords-2-25-million-for-13364513.phpIt's a whopping huge mega-fine, and in my view, it's completely out of line. Fines should be proportionate to alleged harm, and the harm of "removing a unit from the market" is an extremely hyped-up, exaggerated harm IMHO, considering that this is private property. People are fined less for manslaughter or wrongful death cases, in civil suits. Note from the article, there are details mentioned about how the city caught these folks who were trying to stage apartments to look like they were rented to long term renters. The city agents noted that there were the same food items, same dirty towels, same Costco items in each apartment, same shoes and clothes and houseplants in each place, and that the host accounts had been created from the same IP address.
