Incontinence and chronic diarrhea are common symptoms of severe alcoholism (alcoholism was mentioned in the story). The user passes out in bed inebriated each night, not in control of the functions of a trashed gastro intestinal system. So the person isn't necessarily using the bed as a toilet, but simply has no control while in that state. I know that it was mentioned that the man appeared nice. People can be nice while also being ill or addicted, but I guess there really is no sure way to determine if someone has a mental illness or addiction issue before accepting their reservation, especially from a distance, with no voice convo or any knowledge about them or their lives. If a host is not on the premises and is listing the entire apartment, they are obviously subject to great risk to the place because of having no way to know what's going on in it. I would think that much more communication (phone conversations, social media etc) would be necessary when accepting a reservation from a person you will never meet, and who will be staying at your place without you there. While not guaranteeing anything, it could at least help you make a more informed decision. I have a feeling most absentee hosts don't do this.
As for Airbnb not cooperating with compensation until the story went public, I wish more people would automatically assume that this is how business is conducted today. That the bottom line for almost any company is the prevention of public embarrassment and risk of revenue due to it, and then realize they will in fact need to make the case public in some way. I think this would have some impact on companies taking measures to change up how the more severe cases are filtered out from the not so severe, for more immediate attention.

Thanks for pointing out the medical aspects of this situation, Grace. I didn't realize it could get so bad for severe alcoholics that they end up sleeping in a bed that looks like that. At that point I would say they need to be 5150'd as they are a grave danger to themselves.
