Due to the large number of scams for those renting out property, as well as those seeking renters, there are now services which can assist in protecting folks from scams. One such service is an Owner verification service, for those who want to rent property. This particular service is oriented to Travel Nurses, and is free to them:

Those renting through Airbnb have the protection that as long as they make the arrangment through Airbnb, and dont' fall for those scams that ask them to communicate with host by private email (which then lead to the host sending fake Airbnb emails to them that ask for payment by wire transfer) they are protected, and if the place they rent is nonexistent Airbnb will take care of them.
For those not renting thru Airbnb but working directly with someone, one can always do a verification of the property owner by checking with the county records office to ensure that the property owner name on file matches that of the person you are working with.
