I've taken the last few weeks to think about how I want my hosting to go in 2017. I've been going through each listing and apartment with (hopefully) fresh eyes and trying to figure out what improvements I can make. I was talking to a landlord last week about our business and honestly, I was complaining about laundry. The conversation turned to him reminiscing about a tsmall hotel that his family used to run. He was talking about a "mangler" that he said was one of the most important appliances in their hotel. He went on and on about it, and I finally decided to look into it. Well, it turns out that the mangler model he was familiar with is now as rare as a unicorn, with the closest working unit in Ohio. That was a bust, so I hit up Amazon and read piles of reviews. I finally ended up deciding on a Singer Steam Press and it was delivered yesterday. I ripped open the box and set it up immediately. The steam press is basically a big iron that you can lay things flat on, and close the lid and press with heat and/or steam.
This machine is pretty amazing, and I've spent four hours today standing at my table pressing pillowcases to get used to it. The pillowcases are so smooth, so lovely and professional looking. They appear as if they've just come from a drycleaner! I didn't do any sheets yet, but I can see that if I fold the sheets in quarters, I can press the top part of the sheet first, then move the fabric around to press the rest. Definitely tedious and fiddly, but the result is so great. The pillowcases took about a minute each, so hopefully I'll get much faster and whip through the laundry. I have 16 apartments and an inventory of over 200 sets of bedding, so I'm never going to do this on a regular basis, but even if I can do the pillowcases and the top part of the top sheet, I'll be pretty happy. The appliance was expensive for an iron, but cheap for what I consider to be a large appliance. I'm hoping that a small touch like freshly pressed linens will make it feel more luxurious, without actually investing in new linens.
