Dirty Guests
This past week I hosted my two dirtiest guests ever. They were two sweet girls, but after check-in I never heard from them, which is not that unusual since my guests are usually enjoying the city. I did text them to see if everything was fine, but never heard back. I never knew when they were home because they would leave the lights on 24/7 so lights on didn't necessarily mean they were home. On Monday, I had an energy audit in my house for changing my heating system so I needed access to the room. I was so embarrassed when they guy came. It left food everywhere, on the table, the floor, next to the television. Towels and clothers were strewn all over the room. I thought maybe when they checked out, maybe they would pick up stuff. When I went in to clean yesterday, I had to sort through everything. There were about four garbage bags I had to sort through for recycling. They left food everywhere. It took me about an hour to get the room in order before I could even clean. They also never put sheets on the bed and when they left, they left the inner door wind open and the outer door unlocked. Luckily they shut the room to the door or it would have been freezing in there since it was 15 degrees F. As nice as they were upon arrival, I couldn't believe that staying in someone else's home, they wouldn't be ashamed to leave such as mess and be so careless.

Some of my former tenants (college students) before I switched to airbnb were like this...I hope it's not typical of young people, but who knows.....I did notice that you have no rules about "no food" in the bedrooms....Perhaps you didn't want to be overly strict?? I lived for 20 yrs in NYC & would think this is an impt rule to keep down bugs & vermin in the city!

The space has a kitchen so they weren't eating in their bedroom. From my experience, it has been younger people whose parents probably clean up after them. I don't go in the room during a guest's stay so I wouldn't know the condition until checkout. It wad only because of the assessment that I got a look at it a day earlier.

Agree that the youngest guests have been the ones who have tended to be the messiest/dirtiest. I do have a "no food in the bedroom" rule, and I remind people of it - often siting intermittent problems with ants - people do tend to respond more to rules if they're given a specific reason for it - especially if it's a reason that will negatively impact them - who wants ants in their bed at night?!?

Sorry to hear about that. I have also had some guests who were pretty dirty/messy, but only in their bedrooms. With one, it was almost as if he didn't care about even trying to throw things in the trash. He just threw bits of debris (small pieces of paper, candy wrappers) all over the floor. He was an exceptionally polite person, is the irony. He was quite young. I get the sense that some young people haven't really learned to do their own cleaning yet. Perhaps where they come from, their Mother still cleans up after them all the time.

Ew. I think I've been super lucky (knock on wood) - my dirtiest guests have been much older, so I chalked it up to 1. a maid at home and 2. deteriorating vision.
I've had to enter the apartment a couple of times when guests haven't checked out and things (clothes, towels) are strewn everywhere, but 98% of the time like you thought would happen it's cleaned up when they check out.
Hopefully these will remain your dirtiest guests ever, and you'll leave them an accurate review.

Oh my.. what can I say.. we also experienced our dirtiest guests-from the middle east and I wont say what country they are from..they stayed for 3 weeks and it was an ordeal and I have to asked them that I need to get the trash out because they wont even do it and when they checked out I called a pest control to fumigate and asked our house cleaner to do a deep cleaning and get the smell out like "UGH!" and yes ! we blocked our listing for 7 days to get it ready for a cleaner guests. I gave them my honest reviews but they did not leave me a review and I guess that one just did'nt shows on my reviews.. anyway, I consider this as part of our hosting and live and learn.

These girls were young and it wasn't in a bedroom but in the studio they rented. My own children (17 and 20) are sloppy, but not filthy or leaving food around. I couldn't imagine how these girls slept or watched television in such a disgusting environment. Twice during their week's stay I threw out garbage they had bagged up and left in the laundry room. I do worry about attracting vermin if they leave food out. My last dirty guest was also young. I never have any problems with guests who stay in the main part of the house. I also wonder if these guests know about reviews, which could affect them in the future when they try to book. Thankfully there was no damage. They were sweet girls, but apparently a bit ignorant.

Ugh - one week stay and sooo much garbage while staying AND AFTER?!! Sharing the space with guests has its advantages: They tend to behave better regarding this.

That's what I thought. The 3 of us and the 1 guest upstairs did not generate this much garbage in the same time period.

That is terrible. My listings are very spartan accommodations but I haven't had anything like that, so far. All of my guests have been relatively clean. The only thing I had was a guest who once let their small child run all over our house early in the morning.

I have also been very lucky. In four years of hosting only one messy guest. Ironically I did this family a favour by letting them stay at short notice (lots of juggling) and giving them a reduced rate as their car was burgled when they were visiting a museum. They left the house in a shocking state. They were two adults and their children so clearly it's not limited to young people. But this is my only bad experience to date.

Just another anecdote to share on this subject -- I do home repairs, so every workday, I am in other people's homes, working at their places. I get to see a lot about how people live. I go into homes both of homeowners and renters. My experience has shown that the young college students (early 20's) tend to be the messiest. Not necessarily dirty, but very messy. It is very common for me to have trouble walking into a bedroom to do work on a window, for instance, because they literally have things all over the floor. Kitchen sink, always full of dirty dishes, and smelly. Bathroom -- tub looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a few years. And if I need to throw something out in the trash, forget it, I have to take it out to the dumpster, because very often all the trash cans in their unit are overflowing.
The irony is that some of these young college students living like this, will raise heck with the landlord over one little black spot on the wall, screaming "mold!!!!"

Awesome from the point of view that you have plenty of ammunition to leave a review that will hopefully never see them use Airbnb again. Dont hold back girl !

I left a fair but accurate review. She was a nice girl, but a filthy slob. The guests I have right now is worse. I think a lot of it has to do with people who have never used Airbnb and don't understand its concept.

You are soooo right Christina! Instead of causing hassle asking guests for Videos they should maybe me them pass a test to get an "airbnb license" (of course kidding here..)
