To review or not
Over the xmas holiday, I had a guest who had booked for 4 days. 25-28
They arrived xmas day way early. Noon. During their stay, they messaged me 11 am on the 27. They said that they were checking out early. When I inquired as to why, they said they had to get back home.
When I asked if there was any issue, or something wrong with the accommodations, they said they just had to get back. It really caught us off guard.
To add insult to the situation, our airport recently changed its flightpath. At times it's completely peaceful, and at other times its a nightmare. It's completely dependent on the wind (so says the airport) now I know that the 26th was one of those noisy days.
They did not cancel, ask for a refund, not have they left a review. Should I leave a review?

Hmmm, it is kind of awkward isnt it. Did they leave the place clean? Communicative prior? I would leave a review that is based on what those interactions.

It was awkward indeed. Abrupt also. I know that it could have been something was wrong at home, or that the family they intended on visiting had something happen, or that perhaps they had a fight with family, but it was really odd.

I had an exactly similar experience. A young lady (23) and her grandmother (70-ish) booked for a whole week over Christmas (7 nights). After the third night, they left in the middle of the night (or at least, prior to 5:30 AM) and left me a written note saying there was a family emergency and they had to go back home. that same evening, the young girl (the one who made the reservation) emailed me, asking what my "refund" policy was. I replied that I have a moderate cancellation policy, and am not required to refund anything at all, but because it was an emergency, I was prepared to refund them half of the remainder of their stay, i.e. 2 nights' cost. They accepted that, and I never heard back from them. I wrote them a nice review, because they were in fact nice people: quiet, polite, clean, etc. But they have not written me a review, I suspect she's a little upset that she didn't get all the money back. So yes, I would suggest you write a review for your guests, describing how they were up until they left, and then just say "they left earlier than anticipated" and leave it at that.

Why is it a problem that they left abruptly? For whatever reason, their plans changed. And as they are not your friends and family, they had no obligation to explain why in any detail.
I think that your review should be accurately based on how they behaved as guests during their stay. No need to mention that they "up and left" or "left earlier than anticipated". That's no breach of their contract with you and did not cause you any problems. So I don't see why it would warrant comment.

sure, leave a review based on your experience with the guests, if they (a) took care of the premises (c) were responsible, credible and keep you apprised of the situation then that's all good.

Not to know what happened is awful. But I would leave a review as Leah suggested. Remember that you have the Chance to answer their review if they come up with some surprising Statement.

Remember that you are leaving the review to communicate with future hosts, not to talk with the guest. You can neutrally say that they arrived x hours before checkin and left early and left the spAce in clean condition ( or however they left it)

"young professionals and business owners from the Boston area"can mean all kinds of things. They could be selling girl guide cookies or working as prostitutes. You need more info.

Who says it has anything to do with your place? They may have had a family emergency which they do not wish to share with you. Just leave them a review reflecting how they were as guests.

I had a guest leave a day early so I asked to be sure there was nothing wrong with the accommodation - they replied no, they wanted to get an earlier start on their road trip.

I had a guest leave early due to a work emergency. If they give you no reason for their early departure, then it probably has nothing to do with you. Review them as you would any other guest without mentioning that they left early. But definitely state that they arrived earlier than checkin without your consent.
