Anybody knows about the airbnb tax
Hi guys, airbnb sent me an email they'll be taking 30% from each payout starting jan 1st. Anybody in my situation and how to go about it? Please advise me on what to do. 30% is a lot to take.

Airbnb plans to start discussions in January, with the city of Los Angeles, to set up a way that the 14% TOT (Transient Occupancy Tax) can be paid by Airbnb directly to the city. But what you're referring to is different - 30%!! And, Airbnb doesn't expect to finalize the plan to pay LA until maybe February or beyond.

The email was from airbnb. The thing is I don't have a tax id number and they are tasking 30% from my payouts. Any advice on what I should do? Thanks a lot for your response

Airbnb doesn't tax you. The city and the government do. This doesn't make sense; that's why I think it's a scam, someone pretending to be Airbnb. It is probably just a misunderstanding but definitely call Airbnb.
It is interesting that you don't have a tax ID number, but I imagine you are planning on getting one. Either way, this still does not make sense. There's no way Airbnb would tax you or take 30% from your earnings. They take about 3% in fees.
Have you spoken to Airbnb?

Yes I have spoken to them and they will withhold 30% of each of my payouts starting jan 1st. That's why I'm wondering if anyone has a similar experience

Layla, there is a tax law that if you do not provide a valid social or tax id a company is required by law to withhold 30% of your earnings and forward them to the government. They are required by law to do this.

Oh that's interesting! I had no idea. I thought the situation seemed so improbable.

Thanks a lot for your responses. Really appreciate. 30% is a lot. I'm an international student so we don't really get a social or tax ID.

AirBnB doesn't have a choice the law dictates that they keep the 30% and pay that to the government. We all know that's a lot, but that's pretty much what a employee in this country gets taken out of their taxes every payday and what a smaller self employed person has to pay on self-employment tax.

No, this sounds like IRS back up withholding for income taxes, not transient taxes. You need to get AirBnB your tax Id number (social security number or employer Id number

You can apply for an "individual tax identification number" (ITIN) as a foreign student which is strictly for tax withholding and reporting. Likely, you won't have to file or pay US income taxes but you might and unless AirBnB has a valid ID number, they're required to do backup withholding from your payments.
