Feel violated by a guest.
We accepted a reservation for Nov. 14-17. Today is Thursday the 13th. I was afraid that tomorrow Friday (14th) my husband and I would be too busy to meet and greet our guest. So we thought to make it easy and convenient for our guest. So this evening, I wrote an email to him (right around 7:00 pm); and informed him where the house key was kept. He can get it when he arrives without us being there.
Around 10:45 pm tonight, I heard footsteps, someone came in and the light turned on. I was scared. I wasn't thinking this could be our guest. I thought it might be a burglar. We were already in bed at that time. But we got up and went out to check on the small back unit~~ the one that we rent out to airbnb guest. And It was him. The guest who was supposed to arrive tomorrow.
The first thing he said was "Hi, I came in early" we both heard that. I was a bit stunned that he helped himself freely; also I didn't know how to response but managed to say "Oh.. but I thought you were supposed to arrive tomorrow". He said "Oh I was?" And said, " I can pay you cash". I didn't want to deal with it at that moment. So I told him to rest and we talk tomorrow. I also told him to check his email reservation. It sure was from Nov. 14th.
Anyhow, I do feel violated and don't feel good about this encounter. I hated that my good intention and preparation for a smooth check-in for our guest's convenience turned out to be an unpleasant situation. I honestly feel this guest took advantage of the situation and made a decision to come over without a permission. He got the key and he let himself in. This experience did not make me feel good. What should I do? Kindly advice. Thank you in advance.

Hi Jee. If you feel uncomfortable for any reason you can cancel a guest, and Airbnb can even help so that the last minute cancelation does not show up in your profile. If I were you I would call them ASAP and let them know what happened so there is record of it. If you don't want the guest to stay you can ask him to leave and don't feel bad, what he did was intrusive and disrespectful, AND unacceptable. He knew he was coming early, said it himself, and then to act surprised that the booking was the next day!?

Thank you so much Emily. I really appreciate hearing that I have options. I wasn't sure if I could ask for help and/or cancel the reservation when an inappropriate behavior guest showed up like this. It rarely happened so I didn't know what to do. But now I do.
Last night, I contacted airbnb around midnight s he was pretty loud and up until in the morning. I still haven't heard back from airbnb. At 5:00 am the music started again. It seemed like he moved in with a speaker or amplifier. We were really worried. I will call airbnb now. Thank you again for your support.

Jee, As a preventative for next time, I would suggest you get a lock box for the key. We have one and it has worked well. You can always email the guest in advance that you may not be there to check him in, but that you will email him the instructions for the lock box in the morning before check in.

Ken, this is a great idea. I didn't think of that (lock box). I appreciate hearing tips and supports from this community. Thank you Ken.

Everyone is giving good advice. The lockbox is only $30 at any hardware store & the KEY is DO NOT give them the code until you have to; I tell them to text or call me when they are at the lock box. I also think Airbnb needs to be aware of what he did and he owes you another day of rental fees. This was so rude and so unacceptable…. he is an idiot! In some homes he might have come face to face with a shotgun! Or in my case he'd have been met by the police not me. You were brave to talk with him, I'd have locked myself in the bathroom and waited for the police to have him in handcuffs! Idiot guest. I would cancel him and tell Airbnb you still want to be paid because he is the one who violated the rules.

An update : The next day airbnb called me. I was advised to try it out and if I didn't feel comfortable, I could call them back and asked for help. I wanted the best outcome ~~ for me and for him. So I approached this with tolerance and kindness like sharing a homemade dinner with him and gently remind him that the check out was tomorrow and it was at 12 noon. I observed that this guest was up all night, and was home all day. I reminded myself that he might be an unusual guest and he can do whatever he wanted. The noise level was annoying but tolerable. I gave him some space, be gentle and kind and really hope for a check-out without an incident. Once he left, I checked the room. I was super messy, garbage and dishes pile up, things were moved around but nothing broke. My husband and I were just so relieved that he did leave. We now think long and hard about what should we write on the review for this guest. We have never written any negative review about anyone before. I read his review (got 1 review). The host said : "A pleasant guest". Any advice about writing a review for this guest. Thank you.

I state clearly in my listing that quiet hours start at 10pm. And that this is a shared space and people need to be respectful of neighbors. Asking him to keep music inside is reasonable...if they can hear it inside a bar down the block its clearly too loud. As for his arriving early. I have a few thoughts...first in think your over reacting--he offered to pay you so he wasn't trying to get something for nothing but his lack of communication is definitely an issue. What if someone else were staying there that night...I don't take cash from prople because the host insurance won't protect me so I would have had him book the night on Airbnb. You can onlybdo thstnuntil midnight son after midnight I'd take cash for an early check in because the insurance is effective the date the booking starts. In your cade 12:01am on the 14th.
