Duvet covers
I am thinking of buying a white duvet cover from Ikea, as suggested some time ago by someone in this group. (If the "search" function worked, I could probably find the person's name, but it doesn't seem to.) I also remember that another host (I think it was Karyo and Colin from Manchester, England) said to be careful, because Ikea duvet covers have odd measurements and can only be used with duvets purchased from Ikea. So here's my question: Can anyone tell me if Ikea's duvet covers (here in the USA) will fit my standard, Queen-sized duvet (purchased at Sears)? Thanks!!

Yes they will. IKEA in the US fit US duvets. You do not need to buy the duvets from IKEA to fit their covers.

I used the IKEA duvets for my standard sized comforters from Target. No problems whatsoever.

unless Hosts are able to maintain all white bedding to a pristine condition, it's not suggested. hotels have deep pockets to trash bedding that is stained, most Hosts do not and are not up to the standard of W and Botique Hotels.

It's easy to maintain them and easy to replace damaged items by the piece. So glad we switched to all white.

I had beautiful brown sheets that had the colour stripped from them via face cream! She was vegan too. Imagine what that must do to your skin.

Even Hampton Inn has white duvet covers on their comforters, and they're washed between each guest! My advice is to buy a comforter cover (like a pillow protector) to keep your comforter in good, clean shape. I have most white sheets and bedding, no more problem than my white towels; in fact, less trouble

Thanks, all for your input. I decided to go white for various reasons, and after careful consideration. I find white is easier to keep clean than other colors, and Ikea's are 100% cotton, therefore can be bleached if necessary. I was just concerned about whether they would fit. But I looked at them online and they have such a good price, I'll probably get 2.

I have to agree that white spots SO easily-- & looks dingy after a while-- you'd better have several on hand to switch out every time there's a problem. White is lovely-- just not practical.

If one reads through this Forum and all the hassles mentioned, many of which pertain to heavily soiled bath and bed linens frequently. White is great until there's blood, lipstick, nail polish, vomit, food stains etc. And, add to that the issue is that if one is going white, it had BETTER be a high thread count (at least 300) to give the luxury impression (think Frette), otherwise the complete ensemble will come off as a cheap hospital bedding situation. Just sayin'

I suppose that's one way to look at it. Another would be that it's obvious to see if a white item is soiled or stained, vs. hiding soil/stains with colored linens. My linens are middle of the road with a high thread count - very affordable. And no dinginess to boot.

The host did not say whether she was going to use the duvet as a "top sheet"-- as our euro friends do-- if so, she is going to change it every time. White is fine for that, but I again stress that you need several (more than 2) in case of accidents & stains & if having to constantly bleach, be prepared for increased wear & rips due to bleach's damaging effects on Fabrics

Agree - even if it's not used as the top sheet, which is why I'll be measuring my duvets and ordering a few Ikea covers - thanks for the info Juliet!

I have 2 white bedspreads-- one seersucker for summer & another heavier one for winter-- I live in fear of stains--another light blue bedspread got what looked like makeup all over an entire corner-- what did they do!?? Wipe their faces?? It took over 2 hours soaking in ocyclean to get it out-- really, my time is money & better spent doing things other than soaking laundry!!

I dislike high thread count linens and use white, mid-range 100% cotton. They wash beautifully. My duvet covers are not white, because I happened to have some nice, serviceable covers that we're no longer using, but if I were buying new, I'd buy white.

I'm having fun reading all these responses - did not realize this would turn out to be such a controversial topic!! Just to set everyone's mind at rest:
1. I'm pretty good with laundry, my years of living in Spain taught me how to deal with every type of stain.
2. I don't have that many guests, only had 28 all year.
3. In the summer, here in Memphis, we don't need to use the duvet because it's too hot, and I keep the a/c on a fairly warm temperature (we are very environmentally conscious). So we'll only use them in the winter, and we don't get many guests (at all ) in the winter.
4. I already have two other duvet covers (of course). One is patterned brown and green and looks old-fashioned, and the other is cream-colored real linen with embroidery - much harder to keep clean!
5. Actually, I have yet to find ANY stains on the duvet covers. The one time I found stains were bloodstains on a sheet, and the lady told me about them, she had fallen and cut her knee. Came out with hydrogen peroxide.
6. Yes, Rick, I certainly may plan to use them as top sheets, for Germans, etc. You many remember my post about guests from Finland who requested 2 duvets, and I had to give them the twin duvet from the grand-childrens' bed. So that was basically when I decided I needed more covers.
7. AND FINALLY.....! The ones I plan to order are the DVALA style, from Ikea, as recommended by another Airbnb host some weeks ago. I just wanted to make sure they would fit. They only cost $19.99 - what's not to like?

I say, go for it LOL I do like a lite grey color sheets with a darker grey Duvet BTW. I do match the linens and towels to my décor. With that said, white just wouldn't work for me as for linens, and clothing. I manage to spill something on anything white I wear

I've got colored ones and ya know what? They get stains too, funny I just bought two West Elm ones in deep brown to deal with this issue...it's a never ending job. Thankfully between my mama teaching me (she cleaned houses forever) & my MiL (who also did) I can call and ask if it's a tricky one. Plus Google, of course We have four sets of towels for guests and I will say my white ones have caused me to spend the most time on "stain removal detail", but they've done champion!! Whites' alright! Cheers!

I am ALL for the white sheets and duvet covers. They're so easy to clean and always look great. Maybe I've just been lucky, but any stain has come right out with a little bleach. It's been so good that a couple of years ago I even switched my sofa to an ikea white slipcovered one (you can see it in my photos) and guests LOVE it! My friends thought I was crazy, but I love that since its 100% cotton slipcovers, I can wash and line dry them and they look like new. Just cause your linens and sofas are dark, doesn't mean they don't get dirty. I love knowing that my sofa is clean and if anything crazy happens, you can buy the whole set of slipcovers for $100. They're also always in as-is at my IKEA store.
