Washing Machine Broken
I have a renter coming in on Jan 7th and the Washing Machine is broken. They booked prior to this happening, and due to the holiday, I can't get it repaired beforehand. I should definitely tell them, but should I also offer a rebate? Or only if they ask? Just want to know your thoughts...

I would say it depends upon how long the guest is going to be staying, and thus how dependent they would be on getting laundry done while there. For a guest staying only 3 days, laundry is not as important as for someone staying 10 days. Offering a small refund seems appropriate if they would be needing to do laundry. Before offering a refund, see how they respond when you tell them the washing machine is broken. Try to give an estimate of by what date you think it would be repaired. Then see how they respond and that will tell you if you want to offer a small refund.

I'm more interested in knowing what kind of repair services you have in your area which prevents fixing this problem before 7 days after the "holiday"? It is now more than a week before their scheduled arrival...Really??

Hi Rick, I live on the East End of Long Island. It's the price to pay for living in a remote/resort area in the dead of winter.

let them know that the machine is not working and see if that is a problem for them. if it is, kindly agree to reimburse laundering fees up to, say $20 or some such.

Ugh! Household repairs! There is never a convenient time for one's calendar or budget for unexpected work. I like Susan's suggestion. It may also be a good idea, if they will be there for a while, to identify the nearest laundromat.
