See the article here: www.commercialappeal.com/business/tourism/Convention-bureau-seeks-lodging-tax-on-Airbnb-rentals-370153721.htmlMemphis tourism chief Kevin Kane told the Greater Memphis IT Council Thursday that a plan is in the works to make short-term rentals like Airbnb pay hotel taxes. Kane said he’s pursuing city and county ordinances to apply the hotel-motel taxes and fees to lodging booked through online platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner). The Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau president said City Councilman Edmund Ford Jr. has agreed to sponsor a city ordinance, and Kane hopes the new rules can be in effect by July 1. He pointed to what’s been done by Metro Nashville, which informed Airbnb hosts in 2014 they’d have to pay the same taxes as traditional hotels. Nashville officials have estimated short-term rentals will generate more than $1.2 million in lodging taxes in 2016.
