Preapprovals definitely dont' expire in 24 hours!!
I just booked a reservation as a guest at an Airbnb listing (I'll be going on a long needed vacation in March!!) , and discovered, to my great surprise, that indeed, I was able to book on a preapproval that had been issued to me exactly a week ago!! The preapproval was given to me on Feb 10th.
I finally confirmed my dates and went to the message thread and the preapproval note was not on the message thread any longer. I then clicked on the name of the listing as it appeared on the left side bar under host's name and photo, and when I went to that listing page, there was a green box there stating that I had been preapproved and inviting me to complete the booking. All I had to do at that point was check the box stating that I had read the hosts' house rules (which were printed out for me to read, right above the box I had to check -- nice of Airbnb to do this) and the terms of service, and then click on "confirm booking" and then I got a message saying that my booking was confirmed.
And indeed then when I went to the message thread with the host, I saw "accepted" in green, showing that I had an accepted reservation. Which demonstrates that something has changed in the system, as this wasn't previously possible for a guest to do --- and also indicates that the info Airbnb gives about preapprovals expiring in 24 hrs definitely isn't true any more.
